Models under the 'Electric Urban Car Family' will be launched across the Volkswagen, CUPRA and Škoda brands in 2026 with a starting price of around €25,000.

VW said it is tapping into new market segments and buyer groups, bringing premium technologies from higher segments to the "entry-level class" through the launch of the four vehicles.

"Current forecasts predict that the electric small car segment in Europe will be around four times larger in eight years than it is today. On its way to becoming the global automotive technology driver, the Volkswagen Group sets a strong impulse in this growth segment with the Electric Urban Car Family," the company said in a statement.

The new models will leverage further economies of scale and synergies, through the shared use of VW's MEB+ electric modular platform. Some 2.5m of the 3.5m all-electric vehicles VW has made up until now are based on the MEB platform.

VW chief executive Oliver Blume said the launch was a "milestone" in the company's e-mobility strategy.

"The Electric Urban Car Family stands for a new beginning, accessibility, and progress. And for a central promise of the Volkswagen Group: Mobility for all. From Europe for Europe. Volkswagen delivers," he said.

The stock was 1.6% higher at €103 by 1349 in Frankfurt.
